Annotated Transcript
Below are descriptions of the classes I completed as part of the Master's of Arts in Education (MAED) program at Michigan State University (MSU).
Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practice IInstructor: Lynne Watanabe
I took this course during my first semester of my internship/student teaching year at MSU. This course focused on elementary literacy. Throughout this course, I was able to create my own definition of literacy and how I believe literacy should be taught. I worked collaboratively with a group to create literacy lesson plans for young learners. This course allowed me to tailor lessons based on my first grade student teaching placement, video tape lessons, and receive feedback.

Professional Roles and Teaching Practice IIInstructor: Gavin Sykes-McLaughlin
I took this course during my final semester of my internship/student teaching year at MSU. This course focused on elementary social studies. During this course, I planned first grade social studies lesson plans individually, and with a group to be reviewed and analyzed. This course discussed how social studies should be taught at a young age, what topics are appropriate, and many times we were able to role play as students to create the best lessons for our learners.

Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practice IIInstructor: Andrea Varricchione
I also took this course during my final semester of my internship/student teaching year at MSU. This course focused on elementary science. This course allowed me to look at the state science standards, as well as plan science lesson plans to be implemented in my first grade classroom. As with the other courses taken during my internship year, this course used collaborative lesson planning, as well as individual lesson planning to carry out a successful science lesson, to later to reviewed and analyzed to perfect as much as possible.

Technology, Teaching and Learning Across the CurriculumInstructors: Paul Morsink & Ha Nguyen
This course was my first course after being accepted into the MAED program during my second year teaching. This was an elective course for me, testing out a technology course. Throughout the semester, I was able to try out several new medias for use in the classroom and personal use as an educator. I was required to recreate a unit or lesson from my current curriculum and change it to a technology based lesson, using several new medias.

Elementary Reading Assessment and InstructionInstructor: Amy Croel-Perrien
I took this course during my first semester after being accepted into the MAED program. I selected to take this course as it focused primarily on literacy instruction. This course provided me the opportunity to look at student data, analyze the data and create a plan of action for helping the student make significant literacy growth. Also, at the end of the course, I was able to choose a book to complete a book study with a group that fit the needs of my young learners.

Concepts of Educational InquiryInstructor: Dr. Steven Weiland
This is a foundational course in the MAED program for all students to take. This course provided me the opportunity to dig deeply into the idea of inquiry and what that means on a personal and professional level. Throughout the course, I analyzed five levels of educational inquiry: philosophy and history of education, classroom based research, ethnographic observation with autobiography, biography and history and theories of the mind and the curriculum.

Accommodating Differences in Literacy LearnersInstructor: Dr. Sandro Barros
This course was one of my favorite courses throughout my MAED program due to the fact that I was able to do a project based off of my current students. During the course, I learned about effective teaching practices in reading and writing for young elementary students. With my new knowledge from the course, I was then able to conduct two case studies on two separate students focusing on a certain literacy skill (in my case, it was rhyming), create a lesson and assessment, and revise and reteach.

Classroom and Behavior Management in the Inclusive ClassroomInstructor: Troy Mariage
In this elective course, I was able to get my feet wet learning about the behavioral, social, and academic characteristics of children with special needs. I was able to study everything from classroom management to specific disorders. My final project was extremely flexible, allowing me to choose my focus area to learn more about, and create a project from it. I specifically chose ADHD to cater to being frequently asked information about the disorder as a kindergarten teacher.

Writing Assessment and InstructionInstructor: Amy Croel-Perrien
During this accelerated summer course, I was able to customize a lot of my learning to fit my personal interest and professional needs. Being focused heavily on writing, I was able to explore new writing genres (such as poetry in kindergarten), try out writing in a new genre, and create a new writing unit for my kindergarten class. I was able to work with group members to collaborate on the diverse writers we see as educators every day.

Capstone Seminar
Instructors: Dr. Matthew Koehler, Aric Gaunt and Spencer Greenhalgh
This is my final course in my MAED program. Through this course, I am creating an online portfolio to showcase my learning, and to look ahead to my future learning goals. Through the online page creations, essays on reflections and future, I have been able to analyze my learning as a graduate student at MSU, while sharing my work and learning with my peers. At the conclusion of the course, I will not only have my Master's degree, but an online working portfolio that represents me as a learner and an educator.
